We say show some backbone to mean show some courage show some spine, have some spine, or grow a spine. All of these phrases mean stop being a coward. It means that you have a high degree of emotional strength and that you are able to stand on your own two feet without relying on other people for support. It is a very positive character trait. Example: She finally grew a backbone and left the abusive relationship she was involved in.
