Is Ayurveda safe? History and Facts about Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is considered to be the oldest healing science. Ayurvedic treatment includes medicines, special diets, meditation, yoga, massage, changing daily routine etc. Medicines typically include simple herbal compounds, minerals, and metal substances (Gold and silver etc).

Yoga in Ayurveda, balance

Ayurvedic Gurus

There are various legendary accounts of the origin of Ayurveda, that its knowledge was received by Dhanvantari. Many ancient works on Ayurveda are lost to posterity. Some estimated works include Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Vagbhata's Astanga Hrdayam.

It believes that if your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe, you have good health. When something disrupts this balance, you get sick. Among the things that can upset this balance are injuries, emotions, climate and seasonal change, and your age.

The Three Dosas

Ayurvedic students believe that the human body is formed of three doshas. They control how your body functions. They are Vata dosha, which resembles air; Pitta dosha (fire); and Kapha dosha (water).

Vata is the energy associated with movement — composed of Air. It governs muscle and tissue movement, breathing, blinking, and all movements in the cytoplasm and cell membranes. In balance, Vata promotes creativity and flexibility. Out of balance, Vata produces fear, anxiety and diseases like Arthritis, aching in body parts like thigh pain. Implications of Vata diseases are often seen in old age.

Pitta expresses the body’s metabolism — made up of Fire. It governs digestion, assimilation, metabolism and body temperature. In balance, pitta promotes understanding, intelligence and youth. Out of balance, pitta arouses anger, hatred and jealousy. Implications of pitta diseases are often seen in the youth.

Kapha is the energy that forms the body’s structure — provides the “glue” that holds the cells together, formed from Water. Kapha supplies the water for all body parts and systems. It lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin, and maintains body fluids. In balance, Kapha is expressed by love, calmness and forgiveness. Out of balance, it leads to irritability, attachment, greed and envy. Implications of Kapha diseases are often seen among kids.

Does Ayurveda Work?

It works. Ayurvedic practices originated more than 9,000 years ago in Bharat. While modern medicine is not older than 2,000 years.

There are national standard training or certification programs for those who practice Ayurveda, like The Ayurvedic Institute. There are a few state-approved Ayurvedic schools in the U.S.

In Bharat, research in Ayurveda is undertaken by the Ministry of AYUSH, an abbreviation for the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, through a national network of research institutes.

In Nepal, the National Ayurvedic Training and Research Centre researches medicinal herbs.

In Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine takes care of the research in Ayurveda through various national research institutes.

Use of toxic metals in Ayurveda

In 2008, close to 21% of U.S. manufactured patent Ayurvedic medicines sold through the Internet were found to contain toxic levels of heavy metals, specifically lead, mercury, and arsenic. But the public health implications of such metallic contaminants in Bharat are unknown. Therefore the legitimacy of the former statement is suspicious.

I suggest that you should find an authentic doctor for the treatment. If you can not find one then keep visiting our blog. We often post about original Ayurveda practices.

Ayurveda development and spread

British physicians travelled to Bharat to observe rhinoplasty (plastic surgery) being performed using Indian methods, and reports on their rhinoplasty methods were published in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1794. Instruments described in the Sushruta Samhita were further used for research purposes in Europe.

Joseph Constantine Carpue studied plastic surgery methods in Bharat for 20 years and, in 1815, was able to perform the first major rhinoplasty surgery in the western world, using the "Indian" method of nose reconstruction. In 1840 Brett published an article about surgical techniques.

Importance of Diet in Ayurveda

It can be easily understood by the following quote.

When Your Diet is Wrong, Medicine is of No Use.

When Your Diet is Correct, Medicine is of No Need.

 Thanks.
